I grew up in Kenya, where elephants aren't a symbol. They're neighbors.
I watched them from a distance as a child — moving across the land with a quiet confidence that felt ancient and sacred. I didn't have words for it then. I just knew they were different from any creature I'd ever seen.
It wasn't until years later, watching a documentary, that I finally understood why they had always held me so completely.
The moment that changed everything
A herd was migrating in search of food and water, led by a wise matriarch. When they reached the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, she stopped. Slowly, she lifted a bone with her trunk, held it to her forehead, and closed her eyes.
The rest of the herd followed. One by one, each elephant lifted a bone and stood in silence — honoring the ones they had lost to a past drought. No one told them to. No one led them through it. They just knew.
I sat there and cried. Because that kind of grief, that kind of memory, that kind of love — I recognized it. It looked like us at our best.
I became an elephant lover that night. And I never looked back.
From Nairobi to Texas — and back to the wild
My name is Mila Figg. I was born and raised in Kenya. I'm a mechanical engineer. I'm an author. And I'm the founder of Mila Inspired®.
People ask me how those things fit together. Honestly — they always have. Engineering taught me that every system has a purpose, every detail matters, and nothing great gets built without intention. Elephants taught me the same thing.
I built this brand from Texas, but my heart has never left Kenya. Every product I create, every story I tell, every gift that ships from this shop — it's all pointed in one direction.
I love them. And I'm furious they're still under threat.
Elephants are still being poached for ivory. They're still being captured, painted with toxic dye, and ridden by tourists on spines that were never built for it. They're still dying in human-wildlife conflicts over land and water that is shrinking every year.
And a mother who loses her calf after birth? She will carry that body for days. The herd gathers around her. They don't rush her grief. They hold space for it.
That level of emotional intelligence, that depth of love — and we're still killing them for their teeth.
I refuse to just watch.
The dream I'm building toward
One day, I will open an elephant sanctuary in Kenya.
A place where elephants are never ridden, never painted, never made to perform. Where they live in herds on land that belongs to them. Where a grieving mother can take as long as she needs.
