Simba is the Swahili word for Lion. Most people already know that word from the Lion King movie where we fell in love with little Simba and watched him grow into a strong leader.
A female lion is known as a Lioness, in plural, Lionesses. Lions are defined as the King of the jungle, but what's interesting is that Lionesses, female lions, are mostly the hunters. They hunt in a pack known as a pride, and together they are able to obtain their prey then share. While the female lions are hunting, some lionesses stay with the cubs as babysitters until the meal arrives.
Male Lions have manes that grow longer as they become adults, whereas female lions have no manes. The image below shows a male lion resting under a tree in Masai Mara after his afternoon meal. You can tell he had a sizeable meal from the bulge in his stomach.
Watch our video of a lioness we tracked while on a short safari at the Nairobi National Park. The lioness has three cubs with her and she later leaves the cubs with her sister so that she can go hunt for food. We didn't capture that portion of the video here, but it's still intriguing to watch these wild animals in their natural element.
Enjoy the video and let us know which safari animal you would like us to share videos of next time.
