This episode was released on August 15, 2024, and runs for 45 minutes and 24 seconds.
In this blog post, I’ll give you a glimpse into what we discussed on the podcast, the challenges I’ve overcome, and why I’m passionate about what I do. I also encourage you to listen to the full episode, where you’ll find even more insights and inspiration.
My Journey from Kenya to Melissa, Texas
Growing up in Kenya, I always had big dreams of pursuing an education in the United States and experiencing the "American Dream." However, upon arriving in the U.S. to start college, I quickly realized that reality didn’t exactly match my expectations. There was no limousine waiting for me at the airport, and no suitcase full of money to kickstart my new life. But that didn’t deter me—instead, it fueled my determination to succeed.
Fast forward to today, I’m proud to call Melissa, Texas my home. The journey here wasn’t always easy, but it was filled with valuable lessons, resilience, and countless opportunities for growth. On The Front Porch podcast, I had the chance to share my story, reflecting on how far I’ve come and the milestones I’ve achieved along the way.
Building a Career in Mechanical Engineering
One of the key topics we discussed on the podcast was my career in mechanical engineering. Engineering has always been a passion of mine, and it has provided me with a solid foundation to build upon. Of course I faced some challenges as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, but I have had great mentors along the way to help me navigate obstacles and create a successful career.
My engineering background has not only shaped my professional life but has also influenced my approach to problem-solving and creativity in other areas, including my small business and writing.
Launching a Small Business and Writing a Children’s Book
In addition to my career in engineering, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. This led me to start my own small business, where I offer a variety of elephant-themed gifts, including metal wall art, plushies, mugs, and more. I’m passionate about elephants and wildlife conservation, which inspired me to create products that reflect this love.
But my biggest passion project to date has been writing my first children’s book, The Little Elephant’s Big Adventure - A Heartwarming Serengeti Adventure Story. This book is the first in a series that follows the journey of a baby elephant named Amara, who will one day become the matriarch of her herd. It’s a story filled with important lessons about bravery, friendship, and environmental respect, set against the backdrop of Africa’s stunning Serengeti.
On The Front Porch podcast, I delve into the inspiration behind the book, the writing process, and the joy of bringing Amara’s story to life. If you’re a parent, educator, or simply a lover of children’s literature, I think you’ll find this discussion particularly interesting.
Encouraging Others to Pursue Their Dreams
One of the main messages I hope to convey through my story is the importance of perseverance. Whether you’re chasing a dream, starting a new project, or simply trying to navigate life’s challenges, it’s essential to keep pushing forward, even when the road gets tough.
During the podcast, I share some of the strategies that have helped me stay motivated and focused on my goals. From taking breaks when needed to relying on faith, I’ve learned that success often comes from a combination of hard work, resilience, and trust in a higher purpose.
